Gertrude had just started working for 911 dispatch. She was smart and the Sheriff knew she was going to be a keeper. Something about her just said unflappable. She had quickly settled into the routine of the job and read or worked on paperwork while waiting for the phone to ring. The phone did ring and she said, “911 dispatch, what is the problem?”
An older lady said, “ I am at the lake and I hear a woman’s screams coming from North Point.”
Gerty instantly sat up straight and with pen in hand got her notebook handy. She took all of the information from the woman and said she’d look into this. She looked at the large county map on the wall and found North Point on the map. It was difficult to get to by car but easy by boat. Then it dawned on her to call the Game Warden and get one of them to check it out, that would be the fastest. She called their office and the Warden there said they would be happy to lend a hand.
Odell and Dwayne jumped in their boat to check out the complaint about North Point. Odell was piloting the boat while Dwayne was searching the shoreline with his binoculars. Dwayne turned to signal Odell to slow down. He needed a smoother ride to be able to see well. “I see them now.” Odell stopped the boat and let it glide forward.
Dwayne said, “I see now, it is a young couple skinny dipping”.
“Really?”
“Wait! Hell, it is Loretta and Travis.”
“Do they look OK? They were coming to the lake for their honeymoon,”
Dwayne put the glasses back to his eyes and looked again. “You know he almost backed out of the marriage.”
“Yes, I was there.”
“Well, he gives every indication he is happy as hell he went through with it, I can tell from here.”
“Good grief, no need to spy on newlyweds, let’s go.”
“My God! They’ve gone straight to ‘Trick Fucking’”
Dwayne handed the binoculars to Odell so he could look. Odell took them and put them back in the case.
“Why did you do that for?”
“She’s my niece.”
“Oh”
After being apprised of the situation, Gerty was satisfied that the mystery was solved. That’s when the phone rang again. This time it was the Old Ladies’ husband and he wanted to know if everything was alright. His wife was worried.
“Yes sir, we found out it was a newlywed couple camping out. What she probably heard can best be described as squeals of delight.”
He laughed and said, “No wonder she didn’t recognize the sound.”
“Yes Sir”
Gerty went back to reading her article, “10 Ways to Please Your Man in Bed”
