The Chase

December 18, 2022

She could hear the men closing in. The sound of the barking dogs grew louder. Running as fast as she could. Motivated by a panic that robbed her of logic.  Her lungs were on fire. Every breath she took was convulsed: fast and deep. It seemed that she would never catch up with the demand for oxygen that her body was making. As she ran through the brush, the branches and thorns were tearing at her body. She was nude and her body was covered in blood from cuts and scrapes. The men in black were getting closer. She saw an open area ahead of her, but they would be able to see her. She had to stay in the underbrush if she were to have a chance of getting away. She heard the men   shouting in the distance. Are there ten or twenty voices? She couldn’t tell, but there were enough to know if caught, trying to resist would be hopeless. Fear and panic pushed her on.

The helicopter overhead saw her and was giving them directions to her location. The pilot knew the men would catch her soon. They were dressed for the chase. She wasn’t. It would be just a matter of time. She was fair skinned. She stood out from her environment. Very easy to see. He could see all of the roads. Once she was caught it would be easy to get the ambulance closer and give directions to the men. Their goal was to catch her and get her out of there quickly. No fuss no muss, before anyone knew they were there. She was exhausted She couldn’t take another step. Her muscles were on fire when she fell. Gasping for breath as she lay face down on the ground. A fire ant mound was under her. Her breasts and stomach were on fire from their stings. Then they grabbed her by the arms and lifted her upright. One man quickly brushed off the ants as another unfolded a sheet. She was wrapped in the sheet and strapped down to a stretcher. Two men carried the stretcher through the woods as they made their way to a dirt road. Sunlight shining through the trees as they moved made for a strobe light effect. Fear and panic gripped her.
